Matthew Etches
Obituary
ETCHES, Matthew…
Matthew Etches died peacefully at home accompanied by his loved ones on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, in his 52nd year. He is predeceased by his beloved mother Merryl Etches. Matthew is survived by his partner Michelle Owens and her children Devon Owens (Evan Ottoni) and Ewan Simeon and his adored rescue dog Lulu.
Matthew’s passion for cinema guided both his career and personal life. He was a champion of Winnipeg filmmaking and worked in film and television production, film distribution, and film festival programming. Matthew was deeply committed to the Winnipeg arts community, and loved experimental film and music.
Matthew was guided by his principles and grounded in his yoga practice. He cherished skating on the Assiniboine and Red River trails, and time at the cottage in Sandy Hook. Matthew’s creativity and attention to detail was expressed in recent years in his large scale Lego MOC project of the Death Star.
Honouring Matthew’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private celebration will be held. In his memory, donations may be made to the Jaimz Admundson Memorial Fund at the Winnipeg Film Group (https://shop.winnipegfilmgroup.com/products/jaimz-asmundson-memorial-fund).

I am so sorry to hear this, Michelle. My deepest sympathies to you, Devon and Ewan. I really knew nothing about Matt so it was with great interest that I read of his history and the things in life that he loved. I hope he didn’t suffer.
Our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the entire family. Our thoughts are with you all during your grief.
Love,
Kerry and Albert Ottoni

I was so sorry to hear of Matthew’s passing. It’s hard to find the right words in the face of a difficult loss but know that I am thinking of you. May you find strength in the love of family, in the cherished memories and in the warm embrace of friends.
We are deeply saddened to learn of Matthew’s death. We enjoyed having Matthew as a neighbour at Sandy Hook, and missed him following his move to Ontario. Our sincere condolences to the family.
Michelle, Joe and I send our deepest condolences as you navigate this difficult time.
One of our fondest memories of Matthew was at a trunk sale. We enjoyed his engaged listening, thoughtful questions and his overall calmness. He always made us feel welcomed. Our wish is that he continues to skate on the Assiniboine and Red River trails. Michelle and family we are thinking of you during this time.
We are so sorry to hear of Matthew’s sudden passing Michelle and family. He was a gentle man, a humorist who loved to tell stories and make others feel comfortable.
We enjoyed meeting you both and wish you and your family comfort in the wonderful memories you hold dear…..
Thinking of you Michelle.
So sorry to hear this news.
