Donna & Family: We were very saddened to read of Bill’s passing in The Telegram. So many times Bill or “Bull” as he was known, has been the topic of Gerry’s stores about their daily commute from St. John’s to St. Joseph’s School in Carbonear, NL at the very start of their teaching careers back in the early 1970s. This daily commute went on for two years! Every day was an adventure and a hoot. Bill was very engaged with the kids in school as wrestling coach and playing lunch hour ball hockey with teachers and students – beyond his regular PE teaching! Bill was a fun loving person always and was a pleasure to know. He truly was one of those unforgettable characters you are lucky to know in a lifetime! Our deepest sympathies to you and all the family on the loss of Bill’s presence in your lives. RIP my friend!
My sincere condolences to your family. A few years ago I walked with Bill from Barb’s place to the Regatta. My husband and I also loved teaching and I could tell as we met former students the positive impact he had made on their lives. He will be remembered by many .
Mark, you have a special group of friends who have been there for one another, through all the good and bad times ever since school days. I know that are there for you now. Please accept our sincere condolences for the sudden loss of your dad and pass them on to your mom and and sister and her family.
Donna

Mr Hefferton was my Gymn teacher from 1975 – 1985 at the former St. Joseph’s school located in the east end of St. John’s. In those day’s physical education teachers were known as Gymn teachers. I have many fond memories growing up as his student. He introduced many students to wrestling and even squash. Still to this day I play squash and people are amazed that in grade 7 my gymn teacher had arranged with a local squash club to work in having our class play squash at a “posh” squash club. I also remember him encouraging me to stay up on that chin up bar for 10 more seconds to attain that merit of excellence badge. Only one in the school to get it. Thank’s Bill.
